BIOWEG creates biodegradable substitutes for microplastics and synthetic polymers. The cellulose used is derived from by-products of the food industry. Through fermentation and a second refinement step, making it suitable for use in cosmetics, agriculture, and, in the future, also in food. The result is functional materials that do not harm the environment while meeting the requirements of industry.

SDGs:

Impact transparency

Creating measurable impact

  • CHALLENGE

People ingest up to 5 g of microplastics per week. Microplastics pollute oceans, soils, and food chains and pose health risks. Synthetic polymers are not biodegradable and burden ecosystems for decades.

  • SOLUTION

BIOWEG develops fermentation-based alternatives to microplastics and synthetic polymers, produced from food industry by-products. The cellulose-based particles are biodegradable and replace harmful ingredients in cosmetics, fertilizers, and food products.

  • IMPACT

BIOWEG helps reduce microplastic pollution in soils, waters, and food chains. Compared to synthetic polymers, the technology enables COβ‚‚ savings of up to 80%.
